This is a really cool place. The geology here is other-worldly. The best place to start a hike is to go to GPS coordinates 36.259098, -108.251868 which is a large dirt parking lot near Hwy 371. You head east following the dry creek bed. If you look at the photos on google maps you will see the spots of lots of interesting things. It is illegal to remove anything from this area and you can be fined and jailed, plus you will be cursed for the rest of your life!
Amazing Rock formation. Must must go...In order to see amazing rock formation you have to hike atleast 3 -4 miles. Make sure to bring your compass. Plan to start hike early morning as you will have enough time to come back. Pack lots of foods and water as its dry and eventually you need it.
Amazing rock formations! So much to see and you won't be able to fit it all into one trip. Bring water and make sure you keep track of where you parked. Bring compass if you get lost easily (like me). You'll love it!
It is an amazing place. My favorite are the huge petrified trees. Go in the spring and fall as it gets incredibly hot in the summer. Winter might work also.
Fantastic place to hike. If you go, make sure you have a good compass and are good at navigating without any visible reference points. It's fairly easy to get lost! We did. Ended up spending a very cold night on a hill without any camping gear.....
We made an impromptu stop on our way from SLC to ABQ. The badlands are a completely alien landscape that seems to have more in common with the moon than any terrestrial local. Centuries of erosion have turned soft sandstone into unique desert sculptures. The photos speak for themselves. Tons of petrified wood littered the ground and I even thought I found a meteorite (maybe next time!). The best part of it all? Not another soul was there!
